Harmonic Damper Disaster
Disaster struck on our first track day out with the newly installed Turbo. On the last run of the day, after a great session of hardcore driving and the car working fantastic, we pulled up into the paddock at Laguna Seca Raceway, and we heard a horrible rattling noise coming from the engine compartment. What we found horrified us. What we saw was our harmonic damper was wobbling.
Upon closer inspection, we found that the stock harmonic damper was missing 1 bolt, had 1 sheared off bolt, and two other loose bolts!
We were forced to trailer the car back home and think of what to do next.
As it turns out, a common upgrade after a Turbo system is to upgrade the stock Harmonic Damper which is no longer sufficient for the added stress the Turbo system puts on the crankshaft. Duh!
So, we decided to install the Fluidampr Crankshaft Damper with the 35-2 Tooth Trigger Wheel. This should absorb a lot more of the intense torsional vibrations of from the crankshaft as well as give us more resolution on the crankshaft timing to get improved ignition timing.
